Following on from Sam Michaels invitation to train with Essendon as a top up player I was fortunate enough to catch up with Essendon S and C Coach Paul Turk to talk shop. The Essendon coaching staff were extremely impressed with Sams physical condition given the fact he had not undertaken pre-season training with an AFL club and had sought out our services at USP to physically prepare him for the football year to come.

As a result of occupation/poor ergonomics (sitting down), program design and exercise selection (anterior dominant bench and biceps curls and squats), life style (lack of movement, video games, computer work etc), developmental disfunction present during childhood-optimal posture is rare (1).
Having coached thousands of athletes over the past 16 years, a common challenge is dealing with acne and pimples especially through their teenage years! I was listening to a colleague of mine Chucky Poliquin who has trained Olympic Gold medallists in 18 sports. He was discussing the concept of personality profiling to figure out what specific training athletes respond best to. This is revolutionary as previously it would take an elite coach 4-6 weeks to figure out what works best!! Using these concepts and results from personality profiles allows you as a coach to individualise a program immediately for accelerated results.

Chewing gum decreases performance.
An elite triathlete I used to coach, used to hand out chewing gum to his competitors before the race. His competitors thought he was a top bloke. Little did they know he was actually decreasing their performance!! As chewing gum stimulates secretion from the digestive tract to prepare for eating effectively directly energy and resources to the area instead of the larger muscles utilised during triathlon.
He's crazy as a cut snake...Lawrie Lawrence..Olympic coach, motivator and philanthropist. Myself and Strongman Elite Guest Coaches Ian Fraser and Neil Makay were fortunate enough to spend lunch with the great man. Naturally the conversation turned to elite human performance…Lawrence supported our philosophy that you will play, how you train!!
As a strength and conditioning specialist my number 1 priority is injury prevention...I couldn't care less what your bench press or squat numbers are especially if you're chronically beaten up from the training you're doing and not dominating on the athletic arena.
