Awesome to have former Richmond, Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns AFL player; and now Gold Coast Suns Academy Head Coach and One on One Founder Andrew Raines down to impart his wisdom to the tribe members. The One on One football coaching platform that was developed by Andrew is a ground breaking idea. That allows footballers to get trained and mentored by former professional AFL players, coaches. As I have discussed there are 4 key determinants for elite sporting performance. Physical Qualities-(Strength, Speed, Power, Endurance, agility, flexibility).
Having watched him play for the last 12 years…ridden the highs and ridden the lows-They are like your own children-you see them grow up and evolve and mature into sensational human beings then one day they leave home or in other words retire from playing the game! I first came across Sam Gilbert as very lean raw lanky teenager at PBC High School in the AFL Sports Excellence Program…I think it was the 1st or 2nd year I started their physical preparation program maybe 2003 or 2004..this kid although not blessed genetically in the gym for size or strength..was working his backside off..
Awesome to have Channel 7 down to our USP Training facility to find out how our small private gym (Aka the USP PIT Gymnasium) tucked away in a Miami industrial area has produced some of the most outstanding athlete results of any performance facility in the country.
Check out the channel 7 news clip below to see Brisbane Lions AFLW Player and Legend and Special Guest High Performance AFL Camp Coach Arianna Clarke mentoring and taking some of our future AFL Superstars Piper Phelan and Imogen Evans through their paces at the USP PIT Gymnasium Training facility!
It was great to have an awesome article in the Gold Coast Bulletin about Ultimate Sports Performance elite training and coaching methods being successfully utilised by Australian Boomers Basketball Rep and Brisbane Bullets Player Matt Hodgson has been flying up from Adelaide and since arriving in Queensland travelling down from Brisbane using some revolutionary rehabilitation techniques and performance enhancing methods to take his body and performance to another level.
As is a long held USP tradition I always watch our athletes debut games. I remember watching Dayne Beams play for Collingwood against the Brisbane Lions, Sam Gilbert for St Kilda, Broc McCauley, and Bryce Retzlaff as well up at the Gabba many years ago!
Sitting in the grandstands on cool Ballarat Saturday afternoon I was fortunate to witness USP Athlete and now Gold Coast Suns AFL young gun Brayden Crossley-make his impact..when I say impact I mean physically impose himself on the game and throwing his body weight around.
Over the past week I’d been playing phone tag with Kurt Tippett, finally after 8 missed calls, he dropped the bombshell. “Joey, Im going to announce my retirement today (Monday 22nd January), I wanted to let you know first, before it was released to the media, mate I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me over the past 14 years you’ve had massive impact on me as a man and as a a footballer”!
I was shocked, but not surprised!
Awesome to see USP Athletes Brayden Crossley and Connor Nutting selected on Friday night! Having seen their growth and development as athletes and men. I’m so proud of how far these young men have come! Their work ethic and relentless pursuit of excellence has and will hold them in great stead for successful careers at the elite level!
Very few people know the background stories and as I’ve told many of the young athletes in our program everyone has setbacks! These guys are no exception.
Apart from watching him dominate during AFL Games…I hadn’t seen or heard from Nick Riewoldt for the best part of a decade…in fact, the last time I saw Nick Riewoldt I was getting dosed up with pain killers and taken off in the ambulance to the Gold Coast hospital after dislocating both shoulders in the first quarter of the U/18 AFL Grand Finals at Labrador Footy Ground in 2001 where Nick Riewoldt was special guest doing the commentary for our game!
Nick and I had played junior cricket together at Broadbeach, competed for the Gold Coast little athletics club at Pizzey Park
Fantastic to have USP legacy athlete, Western Bulldogs AFLW captain, Allies Team, All Australian player, 2017 Victorian AFL leading goal kicker and 2017 Victorian Female League Best and Fairest Katie Brennan up for The USP Elite Athletes Retreat to get the edge over her competition. Katie was a revolutionary and was the first ever female to attend our AFL off season strongman camp and The PIT way back in 2012.
Awesome to have Channel 9 Gold Coast News down to USP to showcase a little of what goes on behind the scenes at USP. USP Athletes and top 2017 AFL draft prospects Harry Simington and Brayden Crossley putting in the extra work, fine tuning their minds and bodies before their State and National AFL Draft Combine Testing! Click the link to check out the full video footage and a few NEW things like vision and reaction training techniques we’ve never released publicly before. It’s the mindset of leaving no stone unturned in your preparation that gives you the confidence to know you will perfor
Never get sick or overtrained again!! Introducing HRV! It’s a pretty big call to make..although we feel we can virtually guarantee it.. or at least this new technology can give you a warning before you overtrain, get sick or even injured. It’s called HRV or Heart Rate Variability and has been used by some elite athletes and successful sporting teams for the past few years. Click the link below to find out how you can use HRV to take your health and performance to another level!
From everything I had learned at university, I was under the impression that training too close to competition was dangerous, increased the risk of injury and was potentially a cause of fatigue and detracted from performance…..which is definitely not what you want in competition!! However, we found the opposite..it actually, resulted in elevating Testosterone levels leading to increased strength, power, cognitive function, decision making, aggressive and motivation to compete!! Which means increased probability of winning!!! Click here to find out more.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the importance of optimal gut health cannot be understated. From conquering depression to overcoming auto immune disease and chronic fatigue to enhancing elite sports performance and optimal body composition-gut health is king!
Gut health and the associated biome can be compromised from a myriad of factors including anti-biotic use, poor diet, stress etc.
As far as we are aware this is the only lumbar jack in Australia. The LumberJack device is the invention of Canadian Olympic weightlifting coach Pierre Roy, who devised it for training the posterior muscles in a manner unique from the Olympic lifts. My colleague Charles Poliquin first introduced me to the LumberJack in 2005.
While the LumberJack is combination of a pull-through/power snatch and provides
for a greater range of motion in which the posterior chain is activated. Due to the neutral hammer grip hand position some athletes find it easier to incorporate
Have you heard of body tempering? Pain relieving miracle work for the body aches and pains..
Think instant mobility, self manipulations, improved tissue pliability, force capacity and even blood restriction benefits. I stumbled upon a unique method of relieving muscles aches, pains and tension (Body tempering). A world class powerlifter in the USA was using these amazing modalities..to get mind
blowing results with his NFL athletes..Unfortunately the tools and apparatus required for these methods
weren’t available in Australia…

There is a little known remedy that has slowly been gaining momentum for joint pain relief particularly for injuries and arthritis. I was first introduced to the miraculous joint jelly by our functional medicine doctor based in The USA Dr HL Sam Queen. The joint jelly is quick to make and the ingedients are cheap to purchase and can have profound effect to help build connective tissue. Coupled with the fact it tastes great-so you don't have to force young athletes to consume it! In fact many of my elite athletes have it for desert most evenings.
