I'd say that more than 50% of an athletes performance is based upon the voices in their head. No, I don't mean they are crazy, I mean as an athlete you are what you tell yourself. The 6 inches between your left ear and right ear will drastically affect your performance success and results. That's why we coach our athletes to be aware of what they tell themselves. Every Elite Athlete I've ever worked with and coached has had an inner voice of pride. It is the voice only athletes can hear, pushing them to the brink of exhaustion, demanding excellence and condemning failure. Failure understand, is the driving force behind an athlete. Every athlete has experienced failure, and now trains so they will never experience it again. This inner voice knows the difference between training and exercising. Many athletes exercise stopping when they have reached their perceived limit, or when it becomes uncomfortable to continue. But only a select few athletes have the heart and desire to train unconditionally. Only a select few push past their physical and mental limits. Only a select few push past the pain and discomfort. Only a select few have the courage and character to understand training makes them quicker, faster, stronger but most importantly allows them to gain a mental edge over their future opponents. So when failure laughs in my face as I desperately try to earn the respect of that last repetition, it must realise one thing. Each time I train, I not only hear, but I answer The Inner Voice. All the best for the week, Joey

Whilst travelling through the USA I met a strength coach by the name of Zach....he showed around his underground facility and we had a training session there. At the end of the session we spoke about business, athletes and everything in between. His training facility is intense and nothing fires him up more than when athletes slacken off. This is what he told me, ”I try not to take it personal when I see athletes slack, lose the eye of the tiger and walk around as if they have no heart beat – unfortunately, that shit pisses me off”. How does one go from being hungry for victory go to being a non-caring, excuse maker??!! For all the knuckleheads who think they’re gonna get a starting position in their sport without working for it, without EARNING it and without having the eye of the tiger, think again! There are NO handouts in life. Sport IS life. We learn that our efforts don’t always = success. We also learn the power of the mind. We learn that being naturally gifted doesn’t mean we will beat the less gifted who CHOOSE to outwork you. We all have choices. Ask any successful person and they will likely tell you about the path less travelled. I KNOW I shouldn’t care about the lazy asses, BUT, I am beyond confused as to how and why people walk this earth with NO heart! I would also like to thank all the half hearted individuals who walk around nowadays, as YOU make it easier to get to the TOP of the food chain. Thank YOU! The is has been a public service announcement bought to you by Zach. All the best for the week, Joey

On the weekend I ran into an old friend of mine that also happens to be a current Olympic Champion. It was interesting hearing them talk about their preparation for London and when I asked them if they was nervous or felt more pressure about defending their gold medal...I was blown away by what they said, " I don't feel any pressure at all, if anything my competitors should be more scared and nervous....In my mind-No one has worked as hard as I have, no one has had the expert coaching, elite nutrition and recovery protocols that I have! It is my belief that I am superior in every facet both physically and mentally, because that is the way I train and the way I live my life. Many people may mistake this as arrogance or cockiness, but don't be fooled this person is supremely confident in their preparation and expects to win...there's no doubt in my mind they will! Its exactly the same Gold Medal Mindset we take in The Pit. All the best for the week. Joey

I instantly thought how many people and athletes think this way and how applicable this mindset is to society in general and contributes to laziness, dissatisfaction, depression and unrealistic dreams and expectations. Many athletes hope to get lucky.....I hope this super charged adrenalin pill gets me faster....I hope this magic lettuce leaf diet drops fat...I hope this miracle training program builds muscle.... Unfortunately, ultimate sports performance, building a great body or a successful business has nothing to do with luck and has everything to do with hard work. This lady was a scavenger... A scavenger is someone who hopes to get lucky, but avoid the hard work...it’s a flawed strategy compared to hunting. As a scavenger you are at the mercy of chance and odds compared to a hunter! Hunters like you and me-are proactive we actively seek out what we want and need in life and often get lucky in the process....When you train in THE PIT under the guidance of an expert you become the hunter and your discipline and hard work dictates your ultimate success-no chance or guess work involved!
Whilst in Melbourne last week I caught up and had dinner with a good mate of mine who also happens to be one of Australia’s most successful AFL Premiership Winning Strength and Conditioning Coaches. Over dinner it was evident to see why he has attained a reputation as the secret weapon! His attention to detail and standards of excellence are what set him apart. When you see him work you realise that he is at another level and what he does is 24/7. I mean he is on the ball 24 hours a day 7 days a week in his quest for anything that may enhance and improve his team or athletes performance. Whilst many people may view this as obsessive, in the industry of elite sports performance when you take your eyes off the ball, you’re out of a job or someone else will come along and knock you off your perch. It’s the same for elite athletes. I think about some of the great athletes that I’ve coached and trained that continue to have sustainable success year after year with predictable consistency. They are great because they are always pushing the boundaries; always looking for ways to improve and get better. During his Pre-Season in The Pit this year Kurt Tippett undertook many different revolutionary training and nutrition methods to ensure he has an amazing year this year and continues to stay far ahead of the pack. We’ll outline some of those methods in the upcoming weeks. Very few athletes can do it, because they get complacent. Repeatable excellence year after year is what sets apart the good athletes from from the great! All the best for the week, Joey

Unbelievable! When I was consulting with the doctors, they told me that almost 80% of their patients diseases are self inflicted-meaning their laziness and ignorance and refusal to exercise, consumption of copious amounts of alcohol, smokes, drugs or crap foods is to blame for their current state of health. Now here's the catch. As an athlete of The Pit you know how to eat and how to train, every one of you has the discipline, leadership and courage to make your own choices knowing full the consequences of your actions. You have these lifestyle skills for life. You have NO EXCUSES! Its pleasing to know that we are accelerating our health and enhancing our performance every rep. Joey

The Closest Gym is more than 10,000km away....You’re on holidays.....You aspire to be a professional and elite athlete....It’s too hard...It’s too hot....It smells like horse s%^t! There’s no gym close by...It’s only a few sessions it won’t matter if I miss a few training sessions....What would you do? Display adaptability! That's exactly what PIT athletes Elite AFL footballer Callum Carseldine and Queensland Cricketer Bryce Carseldine did when faced with that situation a few months ago. Rather than rationalise and justify why they couldn’t train, they simply found a way to make it happen. A lesser athlete would have been content to miss the sessions, but true to their word the boys dominated! All the best for the week, Joey Hayes

Back when I was a young athlete....one of my most influential coaches taught me an extremely valuable lesson...He called it My Word! Every time you make a promise you keep it! He said this could be about any and everything in sport training, business, relationships whatever! Your word is the LAW! I am going to follow the nutrition plan 100% of the time. I am going to complete every single one of my training sessions with 100% effort this week. I am going to complete my home training program. I am going to perform my flexibility program once per day. Every time you promise to help someone or accompany them anywhere you do it! Every time you tell someone you will do anything for them, no matter how great or small. Unfortunately most people make promises they don't really mean and within a few minutes or hours--they forget about having given their word to their coach, friend or person they work with. But the person who was given the promise, doesn't forget it. Because it's something they really want or need help with, they store it in their long-term memory. I only make promises I intend to keep! By being a person that FOLLOWS THROUGH on what they say, you immediately stand out in their minds as exceptional, and gain trust but something even more rare: Integrity!
Side Note: Brisbane Lions Player and PIT Athlete Bryce Retzlaff had a photo shoot for Mens Health Magazine in THE PIT. For the 3 days before the photo shoot he was laid up in bed crook as a dog with nasty virus. True to his word, he arrived for the photo shoot the consummate professional it wasn’t until after the shoot he informed me of the previous few days.
